Code
With this project I was interested in depicting queerness in its contrasting nature. How it can be secretive but open-minded, exclusive and loving, innocent but indulgent. This semester has been a personal journey in studying how people are a component of their environment, in ecosystems, as well as how we provide context for the spaces we inhabit. While capturing people in these vast but secluded spaces, like they’re in a natural habitat, queerness is separated from society but it also exists in its own.
For this concept, I captured dynamic movement and obscure poses in natural open spaces, like finding birds in the wild. I distinctly directed models to act familiarly with each other, but dismissive and distant with the camera. This dissonance between observer and other subjects alludes to the exclusivity of queerness. However, this behavior is not solely self-segregation, but for survival, as disruption of the social equilibrium with the group is expected, but rarely positive.
